The picture bellow shows my grandfather Walter at the Zugersee in Switzerland in 1935. I got to see this picture the first time during a gathering of my family clan.
My uncle Werner told a short biography of his father and showed a couple of pictures to add comments... like the following:
"(...) Gerade das Gegenlicht macht dieses Photo (ungewollt) gut: Es zeigt nur die Silhouette des aufbrechenden Helden, der in die Ferne schaut. (Wenn man genau hinschaut, wendet er sein Gesicht dem Betrachter zu.) Der Hintergrund ist vage (überbelichtet) und nicht zu fassen. Die Weite entwickelt geradezu einen Sog, wie wenn man in einer Barockkuppel in den Himmel schaut. Da gibt es sehr viel Platz für die Imagination. Das Velo hingegen, die banale Realität, ist sehr scharf und präzis erfasst. (Dies wird noch verstärkt durch den Schattenwurf.) Die Rosinante, die unsern Don Quichote ins Unendliche tragen soll, ist eine einfache, simple Mechanik, ein magerer Klepper. Wie weit er wohl damit kommen wird?"
This photo and the rather the elaborate it evoked in my thoughts would lead to a couple of spontaneous reflections in the years that followed. My grandfather exploring Switzerland by bicycle was ultimately one of the impulses that made me chose the same mode of transport during my biggest voyage yet.
